At first glance, benchmarks seem to offer a neutral basis for comparison. The comparability is questioned, however, if manufacturers optimize their products solely for the test methods. The best-known example of this is probably the driver adjustments of some graphics cards, which achieve better values with a reduced display quality for certain reference benchmarks, which understandably cannot be in the interest of the customer.
With PC coolers, the test methods can also lead to distortions. An open test stand is often used to reproduce the test conditions as precisely as possible. As reasonable as this measure appears at first glance, it is problematic when you realize that an open test stand offers completely different conditions than a closed housing, where the coolers ultimately do their job. Position (standing vs. hanging to the side), air flow and the environment are significantly different and can influence the result.
In view of this starting position, some cooler manufacturers have become attracted to optimize their models for open systems with a standing position, which has brought excellent benchmark results, but which do not hold up under real conditions.
The cooler developers at PHANTEKS would like to first warn against this fact. Of course, this is not done unselfishly, after all, the young brand is committed to not following the sweet temptation to optimize for open test stands, but to ensure maximum cooling performance where it is needed - in the housing.
And maximum cooling capacity is indeed the self-imposed requirement, because PHANTEKS has brought several pioneering technologies to market in order to achieve this ambitious goal with the debut product. The design of the cooler, simply called "TC14PE PWM", impresses with its impressive size, but apart from that it looks largely conventional.
However, this is not surprising since the two main features are only revealed when the magnification is very high. First of all, the "Cold Plasma Spraying Coating Technology" (CPSC) should be mentioned. This special treatment increases the surface area in the nano area on the slats in order to be able to give off the heat better. Even more important, however, is the effect at the transition points between the heat pipes and floor, as well as heat pipes and fins, in order to increase the heat transfer.
The second technology is also a special coating - called "Physical Antioxidant Thermal Shield" (PATS). This is intended to reflect heat radiation that is generated by the surrounding components (graphics card, chipset, voltage converter, RAM) and causes the CPU cooler to heat up. Otherwise, this would restrict the cooling of the processor. It is precisely this technology that would not be able to play its advantage anywhere on an open test stand, since mutual heating only plays a subordinate role there. In the case, however, it looks very different.
The TC14PE PWM has five thick heat pipes in 8 mm format, which distribute the heat evenly over two large cooling towers. The cooling towers are available in different colors, so that the look can also be perfectly adapted to the housing styling. To match, the fans are colored depending on the version.
Two 140s are included in the scope of delivery, and thanks to an additional pair of brackets, a third can be added (the fans are also available separately). In addition to the enormous size of the fans, which is inherently advantageous to transport more air at a lower volume, PHANTEKS has developed an optimized blade geometry, which further increases this effect.
Almost 150 m³ / h at a maximum of 19 dB (A) is an announcement! A high-quality bearing also benefits not only smooth running, but also durability. With 150,000 hours, the cooler is a permanent investment, which not least underscores the high base compatibility.
