It is often necessary or desirable to balance the intensity of light between different areas of the frame. This is especially true in situations where full lighting control is not available, such as when taking pictures of brightly contrasting landscapes. Foreground exposure will result in a pale, overexposed sky, while sky exposure will leave the background dark and underexposed.

Lee's graduated gray neutral density (ND) filters are semi-transparent, half neutral. They allow the transition to fit into the landscape - often quite invisibly. This gray filter with ND 0.75 to translucent and two-and-a-half exposure steps will generally compensate for the difference between a moderate bright sky and a foreground. In addition, it is also the most popular series density.

Lee graduated filters are made of resin (organic glass). They are 100 x 150 mm and 2 mm thick. Thanks to its 150 mm length it is possible to adjust the position of the filter in the holder.
